I recently decided to transform my look for my new year. I was turning 24 and needed a new look for my new year. This may sound dramatic to some, but even Coco Chanel feels me on this, “A woman who changes her hair is about to change her life,” she said! After having short hair for 4 years, I’d gotten extremely bored of my look. I realized that this transformed look was really a big deal when one of my good friends walked right past me! Having done something ‘drastic’ with my look, here are my tips on transforming your look should you be looking for a change. I have also included prices and direct links so that you can buy anything you like a click away.

1. Reflect on current style
First, analyze your personal style. What do you and don’t you like about it? What type of lifestyle do you live? Are you looking to invest in your new look? Make sure your new style goes hand in hand with the life you lead.
2. Decide what you want to achieve with your new style
Do you want to look bold, younger, grown or just different. This I believe helps in selection of a new look.

3. De-clutter your wardrobe
Remove any clothes that will not represent the transformed, new you. Keeping them there will only tempt you to go back to your old style. Don’t worry if it feels empty, you can always add items that are in line with the new you.
4. Up your makeup game
You don’t have to go the whole 9 yards. I’d advise you to simply up your brow game and always put mascara. Drink lots of water to keep your skin clear.

5. Stay inspired
I’m one of those people who are constantly taking screen shots. Before my birthday, I’d been giving hints of my final look on my instagram, just that my initial thought was putting ‘bold’ braids. Pinterest is also a great source of inspiration.
6. Buy new clothes
I feel excited whenever I get new clothes, because I think of amazing ways to pair them. I literally wear them the next day! New clothes can make you fell, well, NEW.

7. Have fun with it!
You are changing your look for YOU. Do not overthink the process. Search widely for what you are looking for and compare prices.
8. Do not consult
Over the years, I’ve learned not to care about other peoples opinions. Do what feels right for you! This piece of advice carries on to when you eventually do transform your look.

Accessories can take your look to the next level. I personally shy away from buying jewellery from stalls in town as i’m not about ‘Nairobi uniform’!
10. BE CONFIDENT
YES you do look good. Believe it. Constantly remind yourself!
